Buddhism Studies

Buddhism is a major religion in Nepal which dates from the birth of Siddhartha Gautama himself. A fable has it that many bodhisattvas and previous Buddhas also visited the land. Monuments of these Buddhas can still be seen in many places of Nepal. Buddhism in Nepal includes Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions.

Nepal Mahayana Buddhist Center in Kapan, established in 1970, has been a famous center for Buddhist studies as well as a retreat for meditation. It launches different programs for Buddhist studies and retreat. The reception manager of the Center says that five to six dozen foreigners, mainly Europeans and Americans take part in each program, which is conducted six or seven times a year.

The programme conducted in Boudhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal, is structured as an intensive immersion into Buddhist Philosophy, Tibetan Language and other areas relevant to the study of Buddhism and the Himalayan region. For visiting students, the Center for Buddhist Studies hosts study- abroad programs in Buddhist philosophy and language and conducts intensive summer programs in Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Nepali.

Nagarjuna Institute offers regular Buddhist studies program on Buddhism related subjects like History of Buddhism in India, Twelve Principal Deeds of Lord Buddha, The Four Councils, Life and Works of Nagarjuna, Arya Deva Asanga, Vasubandhu, Dingnaga and Dharmakirti. The institute is also giving a special intensive class on Tibetan Buddhism and the History of Buddhism in Tibet.
