Do Tips
As they say, while you’re in Rome, do as the Romans do. The same principle would help you get along with the Nepalese. Nepalis are generally friendly people – so they may not tell you even something you do bothers with their custom. But, they’ll certainly appreciate the visitors’ sensitivity to the local customs.

  1. Say Namaste often: Namaste means “I pay homage to the god living in your soul”. Fold your palms together and say Namaste to befriend any stranger. Say Namaste to say goodbye.
  2. Open your shoes outside the gate before you enter a Nepali home, especially in villages.
  3. Take a clockwise direction when you come across a Hindu or Buddhist religious site during your trek.
  4. Take enough money of small denominations while traveling in far off places – changes are scarce in the rural Nepal.
  5. Dress like the locals as far as possible – wear less revealing outfits.
  6. Offer a food item to a Nepali friend with your right hand. Nepalis use the left hand for washing their bottom after defecation, hence offering food items with the left hand is considered “dirty”.
  7. For the most Nepalis, you’re also a representative of a cultured & developed society. Hence, you can always set an example by following a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle.
