Koshi-Tappu Wildlife Reserve
The Koshi Tappu Region is formed by the largest river of Nepal – the Sapta Koshi, on its floodplains in the eastern lowland Terai area. The Koshi Tappu was initially was declared a protected area for being a habitat of the only remaining population of Wild Buffalo (Bubalus arnee) commonly known as the Arna Buffalo. However, in the recent years the Reserve is getting more popular as a habitat for different native and migratory bird species. The Reserve is also home to other animal species like Hog deer, Wild boar, Spotted deer, Blue bull, and Rock Python. Moreover, along with more than 80 species fish, such rare species like Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin have also been recorded in the Koshi River around the Tappu area.

Koshi Tappu region is increasing getting popular for its unique tropical climate on the banks of one of Asia’s largest rivers. One can also enjoy the spectacular views of several Himalayan peaks including world’s fifth highest mountain Mt. Makalu at 8463 meters.  
The reserve hosts 439 species of bird variety, some of which fly all the way from Siberia during winter. Ducks, herons, storks, egrets, ibis are seen on the riverbanks. Animals found here are wild buffalo, wild boar, hog deer, spotted deer, blue bell and jackle. The other attractions of this reserve are Gharial Crocodile and gigantic Dolphins.

The best time to visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is between October to March. During this period, birdwatchers get a chance to view different kinds of migratory and local birds. You will also observe the spectacular views of mountain peaks including Makalu I (8,463) in the north.

Morning jungle treks by the river lagoons and wetlands provide excellent opportunity to view birdlife, deer and herds of water buffalos. Floating down the stream on a boat offers a great chance of spotting gigantic Dolphins, Marsh Muggers and a chance to visit and study the unique village settlements of Tharu community.
