Musical Instrument
Nepal has lots of musical instruments which has a deep relation with its culture and religion. Many musical instrument of Nepal are popular all over the world and it is played all over the world. Being music the important part of Nepalese life many musical instruments are played in different occasions in Nepal.

Sarangi (a four stringed fiddle) is the oldest musical instrument of Nepal which is played by the “Gaine” a caste of musician storytellers wandered all around singing the song by playing it. “Panchai Baja” (five instruments) is the popular musical instrument in Nepal which often played in weeding, processions and rituals.

Several traditional musical style and musical instrument still exist in Nepal. Many ethic groups of Nepal have their own musical instrument. In Kathmandu Valley Newar people played the instrument in their musical culture and in other parts of Nepal “Damai” plays. In Nepal special group of people plays musical instrument in weeding, ceremonies, and rituals and in different occasions.

 The traditional musicians of Nepal are known as “Dum” or “Damai”. It seems that the word, “Dum” derived symbolically after the traditional Nepali musical instrument “Damaha” in the sense that the beating sound of Damaha produces the sound more or less like Dum. There is also other linkage between it. Damaha and the person who plays it known as Dum are related to each other. It is originate from Sanskrit language.

The most popular musical instrument of Nepal is “Maadal (doubled sided drum held horizontally). Dhime is also another popular name which is the large two sided drum. Damphu is the major musical instrument in Tamang community. Sahani is another popular musical instrument of Nepal which is later invented from early Damais.

These all popular musical instruments are played on the special occasions like marriage, Bartabanda etc. Now a day also we can see Damais are playing musical instruments like damaha, tanpura, panche baja, sahanai, narsingha etc. It is popular during the marriage ceremony of Nepali people. Nepalese musical instrument are played and enjoyed by all the Nepalese people as well as the people of other countries also.
