National Art Gallery
The National Art Gallery is one of the most famous and motivating gallery of Nepal and a must visit place which is located in a very beautiful palace at Bhaktapur. It is considered as the oldest existing palace in the entire Kathmandu valley. Here you can see more than 50 windows that open on all the four sides. Separately from that, the arches and motifs are worth admiration too.  Inside the gallery, one can see the impressive collection of paintings and murals from the days of governance of Buddhism, and some very old paintings that are known as ‘Thangkas’.

At the time of prayers Buddhist monks used these painting for concentration. These paintings are very old and dates back to the Malla era. Here one can see the stone-carved figures that date back to Licchhavis and Mallas era. Most of these figures resemble Hindu and Buddhist deities and, as typical of that era, which have sexual overtones.

Some of the documents are classified and are not on public display. But researchers are allowed access to the classified materials if they take a prior permission from the Ministry of Culture.

The Gallery has four distinct sections:

Stone Art Section

Painting Section

Woodwork Section

Metalwork Section
