Travelling by Road
Most of the tourists using the land routes are Indians, and foreigners visiting Nepal via India. The major entry points on the Indo-Nepal border are Kakarbhitta via Darjeeling, Birgunj via Raxaul, Bhairahawa via Gorakhpur, Biratnagar via Jogbani, Mahendra Nagar via Rupaidiya. Those traveling by train from Delhi or Varanasi find the Gorakhpur-Sunauli-Bhairahawa route most convenient.

The road transport is also available from Tibet to Nepal via the Khasa Bazaar on the Nepal-China Border.

Entry Points via Road:

  •  Kakarvitta, Jhapa (Eastern Nepal)
  •  Birganj, Parsa (Central Nepal)
  •  Kodari, Sindhupalchowk (Northern Border with China)
  • Belahia, Bhairahawa (Rupandehi, Western Nepal)
  • Jamunaha, Nepalgunj (Banke, Mid Western Nepal)
  • Mahendrenagar-Banbassa

If you choose to enter Nepal by land from India, the easiest entry point would depend upon where are you in India and where do you wish to go in Nepal. If you’re in Delhi, then the nearest entry point would be Mahendrenagar-Banbassa. But, it’d be tedious to get to Kathmandu on a bus ride. Hence, better if you go Varanasi from Delhi, and from Varanasi to Gorakhpur. From Gorakhpur take a local ride to cross the Indo-Nepal Border at Sunauli Belahiya and enter Bhairahawa Nepal.

Similarly, if you’re in Calcutta, the easiest route would be to enter from Kakarbhitta via Siliguri of India.
